Taylor — Breaking the Cycle

Can you imagine the loneliness you would feel after living for years in an abusive home with no healthy relationships?

19-year-old Taylor* experienced that deep isolation. Searching for safety, she fled her traumatic home life and couch surfed for seven months. In 2020, we welcomed Taylor into our family shelter. She received consistent and caring support from the KCHC staff for the next six months. During that time, Taylor lost her job due to COVID. Despite all of the unknowns, she could count on the security of life at the Hospitality House.

When the Transitional Living Program (TLP) apartments for young adults opened at The Landing Place in October 2020, Taylor moved in on opening day! These units come with compassionate support staff who provide life-skills education and promote personal responsibility on the way to sustainable independence. Rent is scaled based on income and residents receive half of what they contribute as savings upon graduation from the program. Given the freedom to make choices for herself while feeling safe, Taylor began building a positive social network and discovered new found confidence.

Because of donors like you, Taylor received the resources she needed to get back on her feet, including technology and supplies to pursue a college education while holding down a new full-time job. With guidance from our staff, she learned how to manage her own bank account, got her license, and purchased a vehicle.

And, Taylor’s perseverance paid off. Following consistent engagement with TLP services, she graduated from the program and now lives in her own apartment. Taylor takes pride in paying all her bills and utilities, has reliable transportation, maintains a professional job and is considering entering the medical field. Wow!
